Kent Test Style Maths Paper 2

The Kent Test's maths paper keeps the same standard written-answer, non-calculator format across all the papers pupils typically practise with. Paper 2 moves beyond the pure number focus of Paper 1 towards fractions, decimals, percentages and multi-step word problems that combine two or more of the four operations, reflecting the way the real test increases in demand as a pupil progresses through it.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Identify whether a question needs a single calculation or several steps before starting, since Paper 2 mixes both types.
  2. For a multi-step problem, plan out each stage on paper as a short numbered list before calculating any of them.
  3. Convert confidently between fractions, decimals and percentages of the same value, since a question may ask for an answer in a different form to the one given.
  4. Set out fraction and decimal calculations using a clear written method, such as finding a common denominator, rather than trying to do them mentally.
  5. Check that a percentage or fraction answer is a sensible size for the context, for example a discount should make a price smaller, not larger.
  6. Show every stage of your working, since Kent Test maths papers are marked on the final written answer and partial credit depends on visible method.

Worked example

A coat costs 84 pounds. It is reduced by 25% in a sale, and a further 10 pounds is taken off for a loyalty card holder. (a) Find the price after the 25% reduction. (b) Find the final price after the extra 10 pounds is taken off.

  1. Find 25% of 84: since 25% is a quarter, 84 / 4 = 21.
  2. Subtract this from the original price: 84 - 21 = 63, so the price after the sale reduction is 63 pounds.
  3. Subtract the further 10 pounds for the loyalty card: 63 - 10 = 53.
  4. The final price is 53 pounds.
