Kent Test Style Maths Paper 3
Kent Test maths Paper 3 completes the practice series by covering the shape, measurement and problem-solving content that Papers 1 and 2 do not focus on: perimeter, area, angles, time, and multi-step word problems that draw on several areas of KS2 maths at once. The written-answer, non-calculator format stays the same throughout, so the main change from paper to paper is which parts of the curriculum are being tested, not how the test is delivered.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Recall the standard formulas for the area and perimeter of rectangles and compound shapes before the test, since Paper 3 draws on these more heavily than Papers 1 and 2.
- Split a compound shape into simple rectangles before calculating its area, marking on any missing side lengths first.
- For an angle question, remember key facts, such as angles on a straight line totalling 180 degrees and angles around a point totalling 360 degrees, and state which fact you are using.
- For a time or duration question, convert to a single unit, such as minutes, before adding or subtracting, to avoid mixing hours and minutes by mistake.
- Where a question combines shape and money, or shape and time, tackle the shape calculation fully first before moving on to the second part.
- Show every stage of your working clearly, including any side lengths you have calculated yourself, since these are needed to follow your final answer.
Worked example
A garden is a rectangle 12m long and 8m wide, with a square pond of side 3m cut out of one corner. (a) Find the area of the rectangular garden before the pond is cut out. (b) Find the area of the garden that is left once the pond is removed.
- Find the area of the rectangular garden: 12 x 8 = 96 square metres.
- Find the area of the square pond: 3 x 3 = 9 square metres.
- Subtract the pond's area from the garden's area: 96 - 9 = 87.
- The area of the garden that is left is 87 square metres.
