Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Mixed Drill

Fractions, decimals and percentages, often shortened to FDP, are three different ways of writing the same proportion of a whole, for example 1/2, 0.5 and 50% all describe exactly half. 11+ papers frequently mix all three forms within the same question, asking a child to convert between them or to order a mixed list, so this drill trains the quick conversions and equivalences needed to handle any of the three forms without hesitation.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Learn the common equivalences by heart first, halves, quarters, fifths and tenths as fractions, decimals and percentages, since these appear constantly and should not need re-deriving.
  2. To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator; to convert a fraction to a percentage, convert to a decimal first then multiply by 100.
  3. To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100 (move the decimal point two places right); to convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100.
  4. To convert a decimal to a fraction, write it over the correct power of 10, tenths or hundredths, then simplify.
  5. When ordering a mixed list of fractions, decimals and percentages, convert everything into the same form, usually decimals, before comparing.
  6. Double-check any conversion that does not match a memorised equivalence by working it out a second way, for example checking a fraction-to-percentage conversion by finding the fraction of 100.

Worked example

Put these in order from smallest to largest: 3/5, 0.55, 62%.

  1. Convert each value to a decimal: 3/5 = 3 / 5 = 0.6.
  2. 0.55 is already a decimal.
  3. Convert 62% to a decimal by dividing by 100: 62 / 100 = 0.62.
  4. Compare the three decimals: 0.55, 0.6, 0.62.
  5. In order from smallest to largest: 0.55, 3/5 (0.6), 62%.
