Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock
The Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock is modelled on the first-stage maths paper shared by grammar schools in the London Borough of Sutton, including Nonsuch High School for Girls, Wilson's School and Sutton Grammar School, through a consortium arrangement known informally as SET. Its content is drawn from the Key Stage 2 curriculum, arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion, measures, geometry and simple data handling, usually presented as multiple-choice questions with a separate answer sheet.
Method
- On a multiple-choice maths paper, read the four (or five) answer options before you start calculating, since sometimes you can eliminate obviously wrong options and estimate rather than calculate in full.
- Work out your answer properly on scrap or in the margin rather than guessing from the options, then match it to the closest option, since incorrect 'distractor' options are often deliberately close to common mistakes.
- If your calculated answer does not match any option exactly, that is a signal to recheck your working rather than picking the nearest number.
- Keep a steady, practised pace: multiple-choice maths papers usually pack in a large number of short questions, so spending too long perfecting one loses more marks than it protects.
- Watch for questions that give information in one unit (for example centimetres) but ask for the answer in another (metres), since this is a common way marks are lost even when the method is right.
- Mark your answer sheet clearly and in the correct row for each question number, and double check alignment every 10 questions or so if the paper uses a separate answer sheet, since one shifted answer can throw off every answer after it.
Worked example
A recipe for 6 people needs 450 grams of flour. How much flour is needed to make the same recipe for 9 people? (a) 600g (b) 650g (c) 675g (d) 700g
- Find the amount of flour needed per person: 450 divided by 6 = 75 grams per person.
- Multiply by the new number of people: 75 x 9.
- Calculate: 75 x 9 = 675.
- Check against the options: 675g matches option (c).
- Final answer: (c) 675g.
