Measurement, Money and Time Depth

Measurement, Money and Time Depth combines the three linked topics of measures, money and time into single, harder multi-step problems, such as calculating cost over a period of time, converting units before applying a price, and solving timetable or duration questions that also involve money. It builds directly on separate work on money problems, timetables and units of measurement.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Identify every unit in the question (money, length, weight, capacity, time) and check they are consistent before calculating, converting any mismatched units first.
  2. For 'cost per time' problems, find the rate for a single unit of time first, before scaling up or down to the amount needed.
  3. For measurement-to-money problems, convert the measurement to the same unit as the price is quoted in, such as grams to kilograms, before multiplying.
  4. Break multi-step questions into a numbered list of mini-calculations and complete them strictly in order, since later steps often depend on earlier ones.
  5. Watch for hidden unit traps, such as a price given per 100g being applied to an amount given in kilograms.
  6. Sense-check the final answer against the size of the numbers in the question; an answer of many thousands of pounds for a small shopping trip signals an error.

Worked example

A market stall sells apples at 2 pounds 40 for a kilogram. Priya buys 750 grams of apples. She pays with a 5 pound note. How much change does she receive?

  1. Convert 750 grams to kilograms: 750 / 1000 = 0.75 kg.
  2. Work in pence to avoid decimals: 2 pounds 40 is 240 pence per kilogram.
  3. Multiply the cost per kg by the fraction bought: 240 x 0.75 = 180 pence, so the apples cost 1 pound 80.
  4. Subtract the cost from the 5 pound note: 500 - 180 = 320 pence.
  5. Final answer: Priya receives 3 pounds 20 change.
