Measures and Time: Practice Set 4

Measures and Time: Practice Set 4 brings together unit conversion (length, mass and capacity), time calculations across the 24-hour clock and timetables, and simple compound measures such as speed, at the depth expected in the harder half of GL and CEM 11+ maths papers, where several of these skills are usually combined in a single question.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Learn the standard metric conversions (multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1000) between mm/cm/m/km and g/kg and ml/l, and convert to matching units before calculating.
  2. Convert carefully between 12-hour and 24-hour clock times, remembering that 12:00 midday stays 12:00 but 12:00 midnight becomes 00:00.
  3. For duration questions, count on in stages, to the next whole hour, then the remaining minutes, rather than subtracting straight across an hour boundary.
  4. For timetable questions, read carefully along the correct row or column, and check whether the question wants a single journey time or a connection between two services.
  5. For speed, distance and time problems, remember distance = speed x time, and rearrange this to find whichever quantity is missing.
  6. Check that the units in your final answer match what the question asked for, for example minutes rather than hours, or km rather than m.

Worked example

A train timetable shows a train leaves London at 09:48 and arrives in Leeds at 12:15. It then leaves Leeds at 12:50 and arrives in York at 13:35. How long, in total, does the whole journey from London to York take, including the wait in Leeds?

  1. Find the London to Leeds journey time: from 09:48 to 12:15 is 2 hours 27 minutes.
  2. Find the wait time in Leeds: from 12:15 to 12:50 is 35 minutes.
  3. Find the Leeds to York journey time: from 12:50 to 13:35 is 45 minutes.
  4. Add the wait and the second journey first: 35 + 45 minutes = 80 minutes, which is 1 hour 20 minutes.
  5. Add this to the first journey time: 2 hours 27 minutes + 1 hour 20 minutes = 3 hours 47 minutes.
