Money Problems: Practice Set 2
Money Problems: Practice Set 2 is a second practice round for 11+ money word problems, covering totals, change and value for money, before pushing into multi-step budgeting problems with several items and best-buy comparisons.
Method
- Convert all amounts into the same unit, either pounds or pence, before adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing them.
- For a multi-item shopping problem, find the cost of each type of item separately before adding them together for the total.
- To find change, add up the total cost of everything bought, then subtract this total from the amount paid.
- For value-for-money comparisons, divide the price by the quantity to find the cost of one single unit, then compare the unit costs directly.
- When a problem involves a discount or an increase, work out the amount of the discount or increase first, then add or subtract it from the original price.
- Check a money answer is sensible by estimating with rounded amounts before relying on the exact calculation.
Worked example
Mrs Patel buys 4 packets of pasta at 0.85 pounds each and 2 jars of sauce at 1.35 pounds each. She pays with a 10 pound note. Calculate her change.
- Find the total cost of the pasta: 4 x 0.85 = 3.40 pounds.
- Find the total cost of the sauce: 2 x 1.35 = 2.70 pounds.
- Add the two totals together: 3.40 + 2.70 = 6.10 pounds.
- Subtract this total from the amount paid: 10.00 - 6.10 = 3.90 pounds.
- Final answer: 3.90 pounds.
