Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Convert all times to the 24-hour clock first, so that morning and afternoon times cannot be confused during a calculation.
  2. To find a duration, count on from the start time to the next whole hour first, then add the remaining minutes to reach the finishing time.
  3. When a journey crosses midnight, treat the time after midnight as belonging to the next day and add the two parts of the journey together, rather than subtracting and getting a negative duration.
  4. To read a timetable, find the correct row for the station or stop, and match it to the correct column for the specific service or day.
  5. For a journey with a connection, work out the duration of each leg separately, including any waiting time between them, then add the legs together.
  6. Convert between minutes and hours and minutes by dividing by 60, remembering that the remainder is the number of minutes left over.

Worked example

A train leaves at 22:45 and arrives at its destination at 01:20 the next day. Calculate the length of the journey.

  1. Find the time from 22:45 to midnight: 22:45 to 23:45 is 1 hour, then 23:45 to 00:00 is a further 15 minutes, giving 1 hour 15 minutes.
  2. Find the time from midnight to the arrival time: 00:00 to 01:20 is 1 hour 20 minutes.
  3. Add the two parts of the journey together: 1 hour 15 minutes + 1 hour 20 minutes = 2 hours 35 minutes.
  4. Final answer: 2 hours 35 minutes.
