Mental Arithmetic Paper 11

Mental Arithmetic Paper 11 is a further full timed practice paper in this series, again testing the four operations, fractions, percentages and simple time or money conversions in the fast, no-calculator format used by the mental maths sections of GL Assessment and CEM/CSSE 11+ tests, giving pupils another complete set of questions to build speed and accuracy.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Draw on every strategy practised across this series, instant recall of number facts, quick fraction-to-percentage conversions, and comfortable unit conversions for money, time and measures.
  2. Listen to or read the whole question before calculating, identifying immediately whether it needs one step or two.
  3. Work through a two-step question in the order it is given, keeping only the result of the first step in mind before applying the second.
  4. Choose the quickest mental route for the numbers involved rather than a slower written method, since speed is what this kind of paper tests.
  5. Keep an even pace across the whole paper, giving a sensible estimate rather than leaving a difficult question blank.
  6. Check your final answers are in the correct unit and make sense in size, using any time left at the end.

Worked example

A mental arithmetic question, read aloud once: 'Divide 96 by 8, then multiply the result by 5. What is your final answer?'

  1. Start with the division: 96 / 8.
  2. Recall that 8 x 12 = 96, so 96 / 8 = 12.
  3. Now multiply the result by 5: 12 x 5.
  4. 12 x 5 = 60.
  5. The final answer is 60.
