GL-Style Mini Mock 1: Maths and Verbal Reasoning
GL-Style Mini Mock 1 is a shortened two-section 11+ practice paper combining 25 no-calculator maths questions with a 30-question verbal reasoning section covering six classic GL Assessment reasoning types, such as insert-a-letter, letter series and analogies. It is deliberately shorter than a full GL paper, making it suited to a first timed attempt or a mid-week practice session.

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Note that the verbal reasoning section here has more questions than the maths section, so budget slightly less time per question in Section 2 to keep both sections manageable.
- In the maths section, work every calculation out on paper next to the question, since a no-calculator paper rewards a clear written method over mental shortcuts you cannot check.
- In the verbal reasoning section, each question type has its own short method (for example, insert-a-letter questions need a letter that completes one word and starts the next) - identify the type before attempting the question.
- For insert-a-letter and word-building questions, test letters against both halves of the word at once rather than only checking the first half and assuming the second half works.
- For two-odd-ones-out questions, find the shared category in each group of four words first (all fruit, all furniture) before deciding which word breaks the pattern.
- Do not spend more than about 45 seconds on any single reasoning question; these questions are designed to be quick once you spot the type, so a long delay usually means it is time to guess and move on.
- In the final two minutes of each section, fill in a best guess for every unanswered question rather than leaving any blank.
Worked example
Verbal reasoning question: Find the one letter that completes the word before the brackets and starts the word after the brackets: WOR ( ? ) ARN
- Read the word before the brackets, WOR, and list letters that could complete it to make a real word: WORD, WORK and WORM all work, so the missing letter could be D, K or M.
- Read the word after the brackets, ARN, and list letters that could start it to make a real word: BARN, EARN, WARN and DARN all work, so the missing letter could be B, E, W or D.
- Compare the two lists {D, K, M} and {B, E, W, D} to find the letter that appears in both.
- D is the only letter common to both lists, since it completes WORD and also starts DARN.
- Final answer: D, since it completes WORD and starts DARN.
