GL-Style Mini Mock 2: English and Verbal Reasoning
GL-Style Mini Mock 2 is the English-and-verbal-reasoning sibling of GL-Style Mini Mock 1, a shortened two-section 11+ practice paper combining a short comprehension-and-vocabulary English section with a lighter verbal reasoning section. Both sections are deliberately shorter than a full GL paper, making it suited to a first timed attempt or a mid-week session.

Method
- Read any comprehension extract once, all the way through, for its overall sense before you look at the questions, then go back to the exact lines a question points to rather than re-reading the whole extract from the start each time.
- For a vocabulary-in-context question, re-read the sentence the word sits in and check your chosen meaning fits that sentence, since a word can have a meaning here that a dictionary would list only as its second or third definition.
- For a single-best-answer spelling or grammar question, read the whole option out in your head rather than just glancing at the changed letters, since a plausible-looking option can still be wrong once read in full.
- In the verbal reasoning section, identify which of the classic GL question types you are looking at before you attempt it, since each type (letter insertion, letter series, opposite in meaning and so on) has its own short method.
- Treat the switch from English to verbal reasoning as a deliberate reset: take a breath and read the new section's instructions in full, since carrying over English-section habits into a reasoning question wastes time.
- Do not spend more than about a minute on any single English question or 45 seconds on any single reasoning question; both sections are designed to be quick once you have spotted what is being asked.
- In the final two minutes of each section, fill in a best guess for every unanswered question rather than leaving any blank, since a blank answer and a wrong answer score the same.
Worked example
Extract: 'Maya checked her watch for the third time and moved to stand nearer the school gates, even though the bus was not due for another ten minutes.' Question: What does this sentence suggest about how Maya is feeling? Explain your answer using evidence from the sentence.
- Identify the first key detail: Maya has checked her watch three times, which is a repeated, restless action rather than a single glance.
- Identify the second key detail: she moves nearer the gates even though the bus is not due for another ten minutes, so she is acting before she needs to.
- Infer what repeated watch-checking plus early positioning suggests: Maya is anxious or eager, not simply waiting calmly.
- Support the inference with the phrase 'even though...not due for another ten minutes', which shows her actions do not match what is actually necessary yet, confirming the feeling is nervous anticipation rather than a practical need to move.
- Final answer: the sentence suggests Maya feels anxious or eager not to miss the bus, shown by her checking her watch three times and moving to the gates well before the bus is due.
