GL-Style Mixed Mock 6: Maths and English
GL-Style Mixed Mock 6 combines a maths section and an English section in a single timed sitting, the model GL Assessment supplies to many grammar school consortia rather than two fully separate papers on different days. This mock focuses on the averages and data-handling questions that regularly appear in the maths half of such a sitting: finding the mean, median, mode and range of a small data set, and reading values from a simple table.
Method
- Before the test, find out from your target school's admissions page whether the maths section comes before or after the English section, and whether each section has its own separate time limit.
- Treat the moment you move from one section to the other as a deliberate reset: take a breath and read the new section's instructions in full, rather than carrying over the previous section's pace.
- When a data-handling question gives you a list of numbers or a table, read every value once before calculating anything, so you do not miscopy a number under time pressure.
- For the mean, add every value first and write down the total before dividing, since re-adding partway through a calculation is a common source of error.
- For the median, always reorder the values from smallest to largest before picking out the middle one; picking the middle value from the order given in the question is a frequent mistake.
- For the range, subtract the smallest value from the largest value, and check your answer is a sensible size compared with the spread of the data you were given.
- Keep a steady pace through the maths section: a data-handling question is usually worth the same marks as a short arithmetic question, so do not let table-reading slow you down more than the calculation itself needs.
Worked example
Six children recorded how many books they read over the summer holiday: 4, 6, 3, 8, 5 and 10. Work out the mean number of books read, and the range of the data.
- Add all six values together: 4 + 6 + 3 + 8 + 5 + 10.
- Work through the addition in order: 4 + 6 = 10, 10 + 3 = 13, 13 + 8 = 21, 21 + 5 = 26, 26 + 10 = 36, so the total is 36.
- Divide the total by the number of children, 6, to find the mean: 36 / 6 = 6.
- For the range, identify the largest value (10) and the smallest value (3) in the data.
- Subtract the smallest from the largest: 10 - 3 = 7.
- Final answer: the mean is 6 books, and the range is 7 books.

Answer: 15 points (Team A's total is 18 x 5 = 90, Team B's total is 15 x 5 = 75, and 90 - 75 = 15).

Answer: No. The mean is found by sharing the total of all the scores equally among the number of pupils, so some pupils could have scored below 62 as long as others scored above it, balancing out to a mean of 62.
