Kent Test-Style Section Mix 3 focuses on the Maths paper of the Kent Test, the 11+ used to select entry to Kent's grammar schools on behalf of Kent County Council. Method
- For any worded problem, identify every number given and what it represents before deciding what to calculate, since Kent-style multi-step problems often include one number that is not needed at all.
- Break a multi-step problem into a numbered list of smaller calculations rather than trying to do it all in your head or in one long line of working.
- After each smaller calculation, label what the result represents (for example, 'cost per person so far') so you do not lose track of what each number means partway through.
- Check the question is actually asking for the value you have just calculated, and not a further step (such as a difference, a remaining amount, or a total including something else).
- Estimate the size of a sensible final answer before calculating precisely, so an error that is ten times too big or too small is easy to spot.
- Keep moving through the paper at a steady pace; a single very hard multi-step question is not worth losing time on several easier ones elsewhere on the paper.
Worked example
A youth club has 84 members. Three-sevenths of the members play football, and half of the remaining members play basketball. The rest do not play either sport. How many members do not play football or basketball?
- Find the number who play football: three-sevenths of 84. 84 divided by 7 = 12, so 3 x 12 = 36 play football.
- Find the number of remaining members: 84 - 36 = 48.
- Find the number who play basketball: half of the remaining 48 members. 48 divided by 2 = 24 play basketball.
- Find the number who play neither sport: subtract both groups from the total. 84 - 36 - 24 = 24.
- Final answer: 24 members do not play football or basketball.

Q5A tank contains 60 litres of water. A tap adds 4 litres per minute for 5 minutes, then a drain removes 15 litres. How much water is in the tank now?Show answer
Answer: 65 litres (60 + 20 - 15 = 65).
Q6In a survey of 120 pupils, a quarter chose maths as their favourite subject and a fifth chose art. How many pupils chose a subject other than maths or art?Show answer
