Sutton/SET-Style Maths Mock 3 continues practising the multiple-choice maths format used by the Sutton grammar schools' consortium test, following Mocks 1 and 2's arithmetic and ratio/proportion focus. Method
- On a multiple-choice paper, when converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, decide first whether it is easier to convert everything to decimals, since decimals are usually the quickest form to compare directly against the answer options.
- Learn key fraction-to-decimal-to-percentage equivalents, such as a half, a quarter, a tenth and a fifth, by heart, since recalling them instantly is faster than converting from scratch under time pressure.
- When a question asks you to order several fractions, decimals and percentages together, convert every value to the same form, usually decimals, before comparing, rather than trying to compare across different forms in your head.
- For a percentage-of-an-amount question, find 10% or 1% first and scale up or down to the percentage asked for, since this is usually faster than a full formal calculation.
- Read each answer option carefully before selecting one, since multiple-choice distractors on fraction, decimal and percentage questions are often the result of a specific, common conversion mistake.
- Move on briskly once you are confident in an answer, then use any time left over at the end of the section to recheck conversions rather than re-deriving them from scratch.
Worked example
Put these three values in order from smallest to largest: 0.45, 3/8, 42%. (a) 3/8, 0.45, 42% (b) 3/8, 42%, 0.45 (c) 42%, 3/8, 0.45 (d) 0.45, 3/8, 42%
- Convert each value to a decimal so they can be compared directly: 0.45 is already a decimal.
- Convert 3/8 to a decimal: 3 divided by 8 = 0.375.
- Convert 42% to a decimal: 42% = 0.42.
- Compare the three decimals: 0.375, 0.42, 0.45, so from smallest to largest the order is 3/8, 42%, 0.45.
- Final answer: (b) 3/8, 42%, 0.45.
