Essex 11+ (Consortium)-Style Mixed Mock
The Essex 11+ (Consortium)-Style Mixed Mock is modelled on the joint 11+ entrance test set by CSSE, the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex, for schools including Colchester Royal Grammar, Chelmsford County High and Southend High School for Boys and Girls, which is unusual among English 11+ providers for assessing only English and maths with no separate reasoning papers. This mock works through English (comprehension, vocabulary and SPaG) and maths content together, the way a candidate might revise for both papers on the same test day.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Revise English and maths as genuinely separate skills rather than trying to blend them, since CSSE sits them as two distinct timed papers even on the same day.
- For the English paper, expect a mix of a reading comprehension extract and separate SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) questions, and practise both, not just the comprehension.
- Read the comprehension extract fully once before answering, then return to the specific paragraph for each question rather than relying on memory.
- For maths, work through the paper in order, since CSSE-style maths papers are usually structured from easier to harder questions.
- Show working on every maths question with the space provided, since CSSE papers can award partial credit for correct method even without a fully correct final answer.
- In the final few minutes of each paper, prioritise going back to any blank questions over rechecking ones you already feel confident about.
Worked example
Extract: 'The old lighthouse stood alone on the cliff, its paint peeling, its light long since gone dark.' Question: What impression does this sentence give of the lighthouse? Use evidence to support your answer. (3 marks)
- Identify the key descriptive details: 'alone', 'paint peeling', 'light long since gone dark'.
- Group these details under a single impression: they all suggest neglect and decline rather than an active, cared-for lighthouse.
- Select the strongest piece of evidence to quote: 'its light long since gone dark' is especially powerful because a lighthouse's whole purpose is to give light, so a dark lighthouse feels particularly abandoned.
- Explain the effect on the reader: this creates a sad or eerie impression, since the building has lost its purpose.
- Final answer: the sentence gives an impression of abandonment and decay. The detail that its light has 'long since gone dark' is especially effective, because it shows the lighthouse can no longer fulfil its purpose, reinforcing a sense of loss.
