Verbal Reasoning Mixed Practice Set A is a full-length 11+ verbal reasoning practice paper that shuffles several of the roughly 21 GL Assessment question types into one timed sitting, exactly as they appear shuffled on a real paper rather than grouped by type. It tests the same individual skills as the single-topic pages, letter positions, word meanings, number patterns and logical reasoning, but adds recognising a question's type within its first few words and switching technique instantly.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Skim the instruction line of each question first, since the instruction, not the content, tells you which question type you are looking at.
- Sort each question mentally into a family as you meet it: letter-based, number-based, or word-meaning-based, since each family starts with a different technique.
- Keep a rough time budget per question, for example under a minute each on a full paper, and mark anything taking too long so you can return to it rather than losing time others need.
- For multiple-choice items, eliminate options you can rule out immediately before testing the ones that remain, rather than testing all five in order.
- Show a little working for number- and letter-based items even when only the final answer is asked for, since a written trail lets you re-check quickly if time allows.
- Leave two or three minutes at the end, if time allows, to return to any skipped question rather than starting fresh ones.
Worked example
Find the letter that continues the series: D, G, J, M, ( ? )
- First identify the question type: four letters with a growing capital-letter gap is a Letter Series question, so the method is to work in alphabet positions.
- Convert each letter to its position: D=4, G=7, J=10, M=13.
- Find the gaps: 7-4=3, 10-7=3, 13-10=3, so the rule is add 3 places each time.
- Apply the rule once more: 13+3=16, which is P.
- Final answer: P.
