Verbal Reasoning Mixed Practice Set K

Verbal Reasoning Mixed Practice Set K is a timed drill focused on the relationship-based question types that appear throughout GL Assessment and CEM-style 11+ papers: letter-pair analogies, word analogies, complete-the-third-pair, two-odd-ones-out and double-meaning words. Each question hinges on correctly naming a single hidden rule or relationship from a worked pair or trio before applying it, so this set trains rule-finding speed rather than raw vocabulary size alone.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. For any analogy-style question, work out and say the relationship between the first pair before looking at the options for the second pair, since starting from the options invites picking a word that is merely associated with the topic rather than one that matches the exact relationship.
  2. For a letter-pair analogy, check whether both letters in the pair move by the same amount and direction; if they do not, consider whether the two letters have swapped places or moved by a different fixed amount each.
  3. For complete-the-third-pair and two-odd-ones-out questions, test your rule against all the pairs or words given, not only the first one, since a rule that only fits one example is not yet confirmed.
  4. Where two options both seem to fit loosely, choose the one that matches the exact category used in the first pair, matching its generality precisely rather than being close.
  5. Write out letter-pair working, the actual alphabet positions, rather than counting on your fingers under time pressure, since this is the step most likely to produce a slipped answer.
  6. Move on quickly from any question where no clear single rule emerges after two attempts, and return to it only if time allows at the end.

Worked example

GH is to JK as MN is to ?

  1. Compare GH with JK: G+3=J and H+3=K, so both letters move 3 places forward in the alphabet.
  2. Apply the same rule to MN: M+3=P and N+3=Q.
  3. Final answer: PQ.
