GL-Style Mixed Mock 10: Maths and Verbal Reasoning
GL-Style Mixed Mock 10 is a full-length checkpoint paper pairing multi-step worded maths problems, combining money, time and measures in one question plus number-puzzle problems, with a verbal reasoning section built from the word-building cluster of GL question types: missing three-letter words, moving a letter from the end of one word to the front of another, and inserting a letter that completes two words at once. Both sections demand patient, methodical checking rather than a quick first instinct.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- For a multi-step worded maths problem, list the separate calculations you will need in order before doing any of them, so a change of approach partway through does not force you to start the whole question again.
- Label each intermediate result as you go (for example, write 'cost so far' or 'time so far' next to a sub-answer), since a multi-step question is usually lost by losing track of which number means what, not by a wrong calculation.
- For a missing-letter or missing-word question (one letter, or three letters), test your answer against both halves of the puzzle separately before moving on, since a good fit on only one half is not enough.
- For a move-a-letter question, check that the shortened first word is still a genuine word on its own before you check the second half, since a wrong removal makes the rest of the question meaningless.
- This mock is full-length, so treat it as a stamina test: keep the same pace in the final third of each section as you did in the first third, rather than slowing down as concentration dips.
- In the final two minutes of each section, fill in a best guess for every unanswered question rather than leaving any blank.
Worked example
Maths question: Ella has 25 pounds. She buys 3 notebooks at 2.40 pounds each and a pen for 1.75 pounds. She then earns 8 pounds for a chore. How much money does she have now?
- Work out the cost of the notebooks: 3 x 2.40 = 7.20 pounds.
- Add the cost of the pen to find the total spent: 7.20 + 1.75 = 8.95 pounds.
- Subtract the total spent from Ella's starting amount: 25 - 8.95 = 16.05 pounds.
- Add the money she earns from the chore: 16.05 + 8 = 24.05 pounds.
- Final answer: Ella now has 24.05 pounds.

Q4A recipe uses 350ml of milk. How many full 250ml glasses can be poured from 2 litres of milk after the recipe has used its share?Show answer
Answer: 6 full glasses (2000 - 350 = 1650ml remaining, and 1650 divided by 250 = 6.6, so 6 full glasses).
