Verbal Reasoning Mixed Practice Set T

Verbal Reasoning Mixed Practice Set T is a timed drill of 20 questions blending four GL Assessment-style verbal reasoning question types in mixed order: letters for numbers, two odd ones out, completing a third pair and logic deduction. Real 11+ verbal reasoning papers mix question types with no warning of what comes next, so a set like this trains recognising a question's type within seconds and switching method immediately.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Skim each question's format first (a series, a code, a pair of words, a statement) before reading the detail, since the format tells you immediately which of the four skills in this set to apply.
  2. Budget roughly 40 to 45 seconds per question on your first pass through the set; if a question is not falling into place within that time, mark your best guess and move on rather than losing time you need elsewhere.
  3. For the letters-for-numbers question in this set, mark up any brackets first and follow the order of operations exactly, since multiplying or dividing before addition or subtraction is the most common source of error.
  4. For the third-pair and odd-one-out questions, state the category or relationship out loud in your head before checking each option, rather than guessing from a surface similarity.
  5. Keep a mental note of which question types in this set you find slowest, and on a second pass through anything you skipped, attempt those types first while time remains.
  6. Before handing in, check your answers line up with the correct question numbers, since mixed sets change format often and a transcription slip is the most common way to lose a mark that had nothing to do with reasoning.

Worked example

A=5, B=8, C=13, D=40, E=26. Work out (A + B) x 2. Which letter has this value?

  1. Note the key: A=5, B=8, C=13, D=40, E=26.
  2. Work out the brackets first: A + B = 5 + 8 = 13.
  3. Multiply by 2: 13 x 2 = 26.
  4. Compare 26 to the key: E = 26, matches.
  5. Final answer: E.
