Theme 3.4: Jobs, Part-Time Work and Career Ambitions
Jobs, part-time work and career ambitions, Theme 3.4 of GCSE French reading, covers texts about part-time jobs, work experience placements and future career ambitions. Examiners are testing whether a student can identify a named profession together with the exact reason given for wanting or disliking it, tell apart a firm decision (j'ai décidé de, je vais faire) from a more tentative hope expressed with the conditional (j'aimerais, ce serait bien de), and interpret personal-quality vocabulary (il faut être patient, motivé, organisé) attached to a specific profession.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Identify whether the text describes a job the person already has (present tense, je travaille) or an ambition for the future (vouloir/espérer + infinitive, futur simple, or the conditional j'aimerais).
- Underline the name of each profession mentioned (infirmier/infirmière, ingénieur, avocat, professeur des écoles) together with the reason given for wanting or disliking it, since 'why' questions target the reason clause specifically.
- Note details about work experience placements (un stage, j'ai fait un stage chez, pendant une semaine) including where it took place and what was learned there.
- Watch for personal-quality vocabulary linked to careers (il faut être patient, motivé, organisé) and match each quality to the profession it is describing.
- Distinguish a firm plan (je vais faire, j'ai décidé de) from a more tentative hope (j'aimerais, ce serait bien de, peut-être que) - true/false questions often test how certain a stated ambition really is.
- Track pay and hours details for part-time jobs (je gagne, je travaille X heures par semaine) since exact figures are commonly tested facts.
Worked example
Lis la phrase et réponds. 'Plus tard, j'aimerais devenir vétérinaire, mais je sais que les études sont très longues et difficiles.' Est-ce que la personne a déjà décidé avec certitude de devenir vétérinaire ?
- Identify the verb form j'aimerais (conditional of aimer), which expresses a wish rather than a firm decision.
- Note the connective mais, introducing a concern that qualifies the wish.
- Read the concern: je sais que les études sont très longues et difficiles (the studies are very long and difficult).
- Because the sentence uses the conditional (a hope) rather than je vais devenir or j'ai décidé de devenir (a firm plan), the person has not decided with certainty - they would like to, but are aware of the challenge.
