Global Issues: Natural Disasters and Charitable Aid

- Read the whole sentence/passage first, since disaster narratives often describe several past events in a specific order.
- Identify tense/person: perfect/imperfect for the main storyline, and the pluperfect (être/avoir in the imperfect + past participle) for an event that had already happened before the main storyline.
- Recognise passive-style structures with être + past participle: des milliers de maisons ont été détruites (thousands of houses were destroyed) - the past participle agrees with the subject, like any adjective.
- Translate venir en aide à by meaning (to come to the aid of/help), not word for word.
- Translate charity-appeal vocabulary precisely: collecter des fonds (to raise/collect funds), faire un don (to make a donation), une association caritative (a charity).
- Build the pluperfect correctly for sequencing: quand les secours sont arrivés, l'ouragan avait déjà détruit plusieurs villages (when the rescue services arrived, the hurricane had already destroyed several villages).
- Write a full draft, then check agreements last: past participle agreement after être (including passive uses) and after avoir with a preceding direct object.
- Read the finished sentence back for natural phrasing, keeping the sequence of events clear.
Worked example
Translate into French: By the time the rescue teams arrived, the earthquake had already destroyed hundreds of houses, so charities immediately came to the aid of the victims.
- Chunk the sentence: 'By the time the rescue teams arrived' / 'the earthquake had already destroyed hundreds of houses' / 'charities immediately came to the aid of the victims'.
- 'the rescue teams arrived' is a single completed past event, so perfect tense with être: quand les équipes de secours sont arrivées.
- 'had already destroyed' happened before that arrival, so it needs the pluperfect (avoir in the imperfect + past participle): le tremblement de terre avait déjà détruit des centaines de maisons.
- 'came to the aid of the victims' uses venir en aide à in the perfect tense: les associations caritatives sont immédiatement venues en aide aux victimes.
- Check agreement: arrivées agrees with the feminine plural équipes; venues agrees with the feminine plural associations.
- Full translation: Quand les équipes de secours sont arrivées, le tremblement de terre avait déjà détruit des centaines de maisons, donc les associations caritatives sont immédiatement venues en aide aux victimes.
