Place Value to 1000
Place value to 1000 is the Year 3 skill of understanding what each digit in a 3-digit number is worth, based on the column it sits in: hundreds, tens or ones.

No specific prerequisites - this is a good place to start.
Method
- Look at the number of digits to know roughly how big the number is (a 3-digit number is worth between 100 and 999).
- Identify what each digit represents by its column: the first digit is hundreds, the middle digit is tens, and the last digit is ones.
- Partition the number into hundreds, tens and ones (e.g. 356 = 300 + 50 + 6) to make it easier to add, subtract or compare.
- To find 10 more or less, change only the tens digit; to find 100 more or less, change only the hundreds digit, keeping the other digits the same.
- To compare two numbers, compare the hundreds digit first; if they match, compare the tens digit; if those match too, compare the ones digit.
- To order a list of numbers, compare them in pairs using place value, working from the largest column to the smallest, then arrange them smallest to largest or largest to smallest as asked.
Worked example
Write the number 356 in words, partition it into hundreds, tens and ones, and find the number that is 100 more than it.
- 356 has 3 hundreds, 5 tens and 6 ones, which is written in words as three hundred and fifty-six.
- Partition the number: 356 = 300 + 50 + 6.
- To find 100 more, increase the hundreds digit by 1 and keep the tens and ones digits the same.
- 300 becomes 400, so 100 more than 356 is 456.
