Place Value and Number Depth
Place Value and Number Depth extends Year 6 place value to numbers up to 10,000,000, requiring pupils to read, write, order and compare very large numbers, round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy, and solve multi-step problems involving negative numbers, including calculating the interval across zero.

Method
- Identify the value of each digit in a large number by its column (up to ten millions), remembering that each column is worth 10 times the column to its right.
- Use commas or spaces to separate a large number into groups of three digits, counting from the right, to make it easier to read and say correctly.
- To round a number to a given degree of accuracy, find the digit in that column, then look at the digit immediately to its right: round up if it is 5 or more, and round down if it is less than 5, changing every digit to its right to zero.
- To order or compare large numbers, compare the digit in the highest-value column first, working from left to right until you find a difference.
- For negative number problems, picture a number line: moving right increases the value and moving left decreases it, and the interval between a negative and a positive number is the distance from the negative number to zero plus the distance from zero to the positive number.
- For a multi-step, greater-depth question, plan out each step in order before calculating, since the answer to an early step is often needed for a later one.
Worked example
The temperature at midnight was -7 degrees C. By midday it had risen by 15 degrees C. Round the midday temperature to the nearest 10, and state the interval (difference) between the midnight and midday temperatures.
- Find the midday temperature by adding the rise to the starting temperature: -7 + 15.
- -7 + 15 = 8, so the midday temperature is 8 degrees C.
- Round 8 to the nearest 10: since 8 is at or past the halfway point of 5, it rounds up to 10.
- The interval between -7 and 8 is the distance from -7 to 0 (which is 7) plus the distance from 0 to 8 (which is 8): 7 + 8 = 15 degrees C.
