Multiplication and Division Facts to 12 x 12 is the Year 4 topic covering instant recall of every times table and matching division fact up to 12 x 12, tested nationally in the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check, and using known facts to work out related ones.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Learn each times table in order first, counting up in the same steps (for example 7, 14, 21, 28), until it can be said fluently.
- Practise the facts out of order too, using flashcards or quick-fire questions, since the Multiplication Tables Check and SATs ask facts in a random order, not just in sequence.
- Use commutativity to halve the facts you need to learn: if you know 6 x 7 = 42, you already know 7 x 6 = 42, so it does not need to be learned twice.
- Use each multiplication fact to derive its two matching division facts: from 6 x 7 = 42, derive 42 / 7 = 6 and 42 / 6 = 7.
- For a harder-looking fact, break it into two known facts and add the results, for example work out 12 x 8 as (10 x 8) + (2 x 8) = 80 + 16 = 96.
- Use a known fact to work out a related fact with bigger numbers by multiplying or dividing by 10, for example use 9 x 6 = 54 to work out 90 x 6 = 540.
Worked example
Use known facts to work out 11 x 12, and then use your answer to find 132 divided by 11.
- Split 12 into 10 + 2, so 11 x 12 = (11 x 10) + (11 x 2).
- 11 x 10 = 110, and 11 x 2 = 22.
- 110 + 22 = 132, so 11 x 12 = 132.
- Since multiplication and division are inverse operations, 132 / 11 = 12, because 11 x 12 = 132.

Answer: Multiplication and division are inverse operations, so if 7 x 8 = 56, then 56 divided by 8 must equal 7 (and 56 divided by 7 must equal 8); no extra calculation is needed once the multiplication fact is known.
