Multiplication and Division: 3, 4 and 8 Times Tables
Multiplication and Division: 3, 4 and 8 Times Tables is the Year 3 topic covering recalling and using these times tables and their matching division facts from memory, including two-digit by one-digit multiplication and the way a multiplication fact and its related division facts form a family.
Method
- Learn each times table (3x, 4x, 8x) in order first, then practise recalling the facts out of order.
- Notice that the 8 times table is double the 4 times table, and the 4 times table is double the 2 times table, so use doubling to work out an unfamiliar fact.
- Use the fact that multiplication can be done in either order (e.g. 3 x 8 gives the same answer as 8 x 3) to check a calculation or choose the easier way round.
- Use a known multiplication fact to find its related division facts (e.g. if 4 x 6 = 24, then 24 divided by 4 = 6 and 24 divided by 6 = 4).
- For a word problem, decide whether equal groups are being combined (multiplication) or shared or grouped (division), and write the number sentence before calculating.
- Check the answer using the inverse operation.
Worked example
A minibus has 8 rows of seats with 4 seats in each row. Work out how many seats there are in total.
- Identify that this is a multiplication problem, since it involves 8 equal groups of 4.
- Write the number sentence: 8 x 4.
- Use the doubling strategy: 4 x 4 = 16, so 8 x 4 = 16 x 2 = 32.
- The minibus has 32 seats.
