Synovial Joints: Ligaments, Tendons and Cartilage

Joints are classified by how much movement they allow: fibrous joints are immovable, cartilaginous joints allow slight movement, and synovial joints allow free movement, which is why GCSE PE focuses on them.

Method

  1. Learn the three joint classifications by how much movement they allow: fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial, and that GCSE PE focuses on synovial joints because sport requires free movement.
  2. Learn the specific structures found at a synovial joint and the exact term for each: synovial membrane, synovial fluid, joint capsule, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.
  3. Learn the precise function of each structure, not just its location - fix the common confusion between ligaments and tendons: a ligament joins bone to bone, a tendon joins muscle to bone.
  4. Learn the four synovial joint types used at GCSE (ball and socket, hinge, pivot, condyloid/gliding), a named example of each in the body, and the movements each one allows.
  5. Learn the full set of joint movement names (flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, circumduction, plantarflexion, dorsiflexion) and practise identifying which one is happening in a described or pictured sporting action.
  6. For identify or name command words, give only the term - no description is credited. For describe, add structural detail; for explain, add the effect on performance or injury risk.
  7. For extended questions, choose a named joint action in a named sport, then work through the joint type, the movement produced and the structures enabling it, in that order.

Worked example

A tennis player performs a serve, raising the arm above the head before rotating it forward and down. Name the type of synovial joint at the shoulder, identify TWO movements occurring at the shoulder during the serve, and state one structure that stabilises the joint during this action.

  1. Identify the joint type at the shoulder: a ball and socket joint.
  2. Identify the first movement, during the upward swing: flexion (or abduction), raising the arm away from the body.
  3. Identify the second movement, during the forward downward swing: rotation, as the arm whips forward.
  4. Identify a stabilising structure: ligaments, which hold the head of the humerus in the socket and resist dislocation under the force of the serve.
  5. State the full answer: a ball and socket joint; flexion/abduction followed by rotation; stabilised by ligaments.
