Injury Prevention Including Common Sporting Injuries

Sporting injuries are classified by the type of tissue damaged, such as a sprain (damage to a ligament) or a strain (damage to a muscle or tendon), usually caused by a joint or muscle being forced beyond its normal range of movement.

Method

  1. Learn the definition of each named injury type, sprain, strain, fracture (traumatic and stress), dislocation, torn cartilage, and the tissue each one damages.
  2. Learn the typical cause and one typical sporting example of each injury, e.g. an ankle sprain from landing awkwardly in netball, or a hamstring strain from sprinting.
  3. Learn the general prevention measures that reduce the risk of most injuries: an appropriate warm-up, correct technique, suitable protective equipment, a good baseline level of fitness, and following the rules of the sport.
  4. Practise reading a short scenario describing how an injury happened and its symptoms, and using both to identify the most likely injury type.
  5. Distinguish a stress fracture, gradual onset from repeated overuse and common in distance runners, from a traumatic fracture, sudden onset from a single significant impact.
  6. For explain how to reduce the risk answers, always link the prevention measure to the specific mechanism of the injury it is preventing, rather than listing measures generically.

Worked example

During a football match, a defender lands awkwardly after jumping for a header, twisting their ankle. Their ankle immediately swells, is painful to put weight on, and has a reduced range of movement, but there is no visible deformity of the bone. Identify the most likely injury, and explain your reasoning.

  1. Note that there is no visible deformity, which makes a fracture or dislocation less likely.
  2. Note the mechanism of injury: a sudden twisting force at the ankle joint.
  3. Note the symptoms: swelling, pain on weight-bearing, and reduced range of movement, but not a completely unusable joint or bone displacement.
  4. Match this pattern to the definitions: a twisting force at a joint, causing swelling and pain without a bone being visibly out of place, is characteristic of ligament damage.
  5. State the answer: the most likely injury is a sprained ankle, ligament damage, caused by the joint being forced beyond its normal range of movement as the defender landed awkwardly.
