Short-Term Effects of Exercise on the Body Systems

Short-term effects are the immediate responses the body makes during and straight after a single bout of exercise, which reverse once exercise stops - unlike long-term adaptations, which build up over months of training.

Method

  1. Learn the difference between a short-term effect, an immediate response that happens during or straight after a single exercise session and reverses once you stop, and a long-term adaptation, a lasting change from months of consistent training - this distinction is a very common exam trap.
  2. Learn the short-term effects on each body system separately: musculoskeletal (increased range of movement as synovial fluid warms and thins), cardiovascular (increased heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output and blood pressure), respiratory (increased breathing rate and tidal volume), and muscular (increased muscle temperature and possible lactic acid build-up).
  3. Learn the term vascular shunt (blood shunting) and be able to explain it as the redistribution of blood flow away from non-essential organs, such as the digestive system, and towards the working muscles during exercise, via vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
  4. Learn to link a short-term effect to why it is useful for performance, e.g. an increased breathing rate delivers more oxygen to the working muscles to meet the increased demand for aerobic energy production.
  5. Practise identifying which body system a given short-term effect belongs to, since exam questions often mix examples from several systems in one scenario.
  6. For extended questions, structure the answer system by system, musculoskeletal, then cardiovascular, then respiratory, then muscular, so no system is missed, finishing each point with its effect on performance.

Worked example

A hockey player begins a warm-up jog followed by some sprints. State ONE short-term effect of this exercise on the cardiovascular system and ONE on the respiratory system, and explain why each effect benefits the player.

  1. State the cardiovascular effect: heart rate increases.
  2. Explain why it benefits the player: a higher heart rate increases cardiac output, delivering more oxygenated blood to the working muscles to meet their increased energy demand.
  3. State the respiratory effect: breathing rate (and tidal volume) increases.
  4. Explain why it benefits the player: this increases the volume of air reaching the alveoli each minute, increasing the amount of oxygen available for gaseous exchange to supply the muscles.
  5. Summarise: both effects work together to increase the oxygen supply available to the working muscles as exercise intensity rises.
