Warm-Up and Cool-Down
A warm-up is the preparation performed before exercise in three phases: a pulse raiser to gradually raise heart rate and temperature, mobility and stretching, and skill rehearsal specific to the performer's sport.

No specific prerequisites - this is a good place to start.
Method
- Learn the three phases of a warm-up, in order: pulse raiser, mobility/stretching, skill rehearsal, and one example activity for each.
- Learn at least three specific physiological benefits of warming up, e.g. increased muscle temperature/elasticity, increased blood flow/oxygen delivery, faster nerve impulses, and link each to a reduction in injury risk or improvement in performance.
- Learn the structure of a cool-down, light continuous exercise followed by static stretching, and be able to explain why the order matters, since light exercise first keeps blood circulating before the body settles into stretching.
- Learn at least two specific benefits of cooling down, e.g. reduces blood pooling, may speed lactic acid removal, reduces DOMS, and link each to recovery.
- Practise dividing a total warm-up or cool-down time between phases using given percentages or proportions.
- When asked to plan a warm-up or cool-down for a named sport, make each phase specific to that sport, e.g. skill rehearsal should use drills the performer will actually use in the activity, not generic exercises.
- For explain answers, always give the physiological reason behind the benefit, what changes in the body, not just the benefit itself.
Worked example
A coach plans a 20-minute warm-up for a netball squad, splitting the time as 40% pulse raiser, 35% mobility/stretching and 25% skill rehearsal. Calculate how many minutes are spent on each phase.
- Calculate the pulse raiser time: 40% of 20 minutes = 0.4 x 20.
- Complete the multiplication: 0.4 x 20 = 8 minutes.
- Calculate the mobility/stretching time: 35% of 20 minutes = 0.35 x 20.
- Complete the multiplication: 0.35 x 20 = 7 minutes.
- Calculate the skill rehearsal time: 25% of 20 minutes = 0.25 x 20.
- Complete the multiplication: 0.25 x 20 = 5 minutes, and check the total: 8 + 7 + 5 = 20 minutes, which matches the total warm-up time.
