Evaluating Fitness Test Results: Reliability, Validity and Normative Data
Reliability is the extent to which a fitness test produces consistent results when it is repeated under the same conditions; a reliable test can be trusted to show a genuine change in fitness rather than simple variation in the test itself.

Method
- Learn the precise difference between reliability, consistency, and validity, measuring the right thing, and be ready to give an example of a test that is reliable but not valid for a particular sport.
- Learn what normative data tables are used for and how to read one, matching the performer's age, gender and raw score to the correct row or column to find their rating.
- Learn at least three reasons why fitness testing is carried out: baseline data, identifying strengths/weaknesses to guide training, monitoring progress and motivation, and squad selection.
- Learn at least three limitations of fitness testing generally: dependence on motivation and effort, tester competence and consistency, and limited ability to replicate sport-specific or match conditions.
- Practise comparing a given raw score against a normative data table provided in the question, and stating the correct rating band.
- For evaluate this test answers, always give a specific strength AND a specific limitation, applied to the named sport or performer in the question, and finish with a supported judgement.
- Draw on named tests, e.g. multi-stage fitness test, sit and reach, as concrete examples when critically evaluating fitness testing.
Worked example
A 16-year-old male scores 44 ml/kg/min on the multi-stage fitness test. Using this normative data table for 16-year-old males (Excellent: above 51; Good: 43 to 51; Average: 35 to 42; Below average: 28 to 34; Poor: below 28), state the performer's fitness rating, and explain why normative data is useful here.
- Compare the performer's score, 44, against each band in the table, starting from the top.
- Check whether 44 is above 51: it is not, so it is not Excellent.
- Check whether 44 falls between 43 and 51: it does, since 43 is less than or equal to 44, and 44 is less than or equal to 51.
- State the rating: the performer's score of 44 ml/kg/min falls in the Good band.
- Explain the usefulness: normative data lets the coach interpret a raw score in context, showing how this performer compares to others of the same age and gender, rather than the number meaning nothing on its own.
