Sport Psychology: Arousal and the Inverted-U Theory

In sport psychology, arousal and the inverted-U theory describe a performer's level of physiological and psychological readiness or alertness to perform, ranging from very low, drowsy and under-aroused, to very high, tense and over-aroused.

Method

  1. Identify the performer's current arousal level from the scenario: signs of under-arousal include being sluggish, unmotivated and slow to react, while signs of over-arousal include shaking, rushed decisions, muscle tension and narrowed or poor concentration.
  2. Identify the skill's classification, using the basic-complex and gross-fine continua, to judge where its optimal arousal point sits on the inverted-U curve; fine or complex skills need lower optimal arousal, gross or basic skills can tolerate higher optimal arousal.
  3. Compare the performer's current arousal to their skill's optimal point: if under-aroused, performance should improve as arousal rises towards the optimal point; if over-aroused, past the optimal point, performance should decline unless arousal is lowered.
  4. Recommend a strategy matched to the direction needed: to raise arousal, use techniques such as an energetic warm-up, a motivational team talk or up-tempo music; to lower arousal, use relaxation techniques such as controlled breathing or progressive muscular relaxation.
  5. For extended questions, justify the recommendation by referring to both the specific skill's position on the continua and the performer's described state, not just the general theory.
  6. Remember the inverted-U is a simplified model: note, where relevant, that some performers can tolerate higher arousal than others because of experience or personality.

Worked example

A goalkeeper about to face a penalty shootout describes feeling 'shaky, with my mind racing and my hands trembling'. Using the inverted-U theory, explain what is happening to her performance and suggest a strategy to help her.

  1. Identify her arousal state: shaking hands, a racing mind and trembling are signs of over-arousal, well past a moderate level.
  2. Identify the skill: saving a penalty is a fast, largely reactive skill requiring fine motor control and precise decision making, reading the kicker and timing the dive, so its optimal arousal point sits in the low-to-moderate part of the inverted-U, not at the extreme high end.
  3. Apply the theory: because her current arousal is above the optimal point for this skill, the inverted-U predicts her performance, including reaction time, decision making and coordination, will decline rather than improve if arousal rises any further.
  4. Recommend a strategy to lower arousal: controlled breathing, slow deep breaths to reduce heart rate, used immediately before facing each kick, to bring her arousal back down towards her optimal point.
  5. State the expected effect: lowering her arousal towards the optimal point for this skill should improve her concentration, timing and decision making during the shootout.
