Traditional Festivals and Celebrations in the Spanish-Speaking World
Translation on traditional festivals and celebrations across the Spanish-speaking world covers both directions: what happens every year, customs and food, and a specific memory of one celebration. The examiner is testing the contrast between the impersonal se in the present for general customs (se celebra) and the preterite/imperfect for narrating one specific occasion, plus custom-specific vocabulary such as el desfile and disfrazarse de.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Use the present or impersonal se to describe what generally happens every year (se celebra el Día de los Muertos en noviembre), and the preterite to narrate what happened on one specific occasion.
- Use the imperfect for the background atmosphere of a celebration (había mucha gente, la música sonaba por todas partes) alongside the preterite for the specific events that took place (llegamos, comimos, bailamos).
- Translate custom-specific vocabulary precisely rather than guessing from English: los fuegos artificiales (fireworks), el desfile (the parade), disfrazarse de (to dress up as), la ofrenda (the offering).
- Translate time expressions of recurrence exactly: todos los años (every year), cada verano (every summer), desde hace siglos (for centuries), where desde hace + time + present tense describes something still ongoing.
- Use superlatives to translate opinions about festivities: la fiesta más alegre del año (the happiest festival of the year), lo mejor de la celebración (the best thing about the celebration).
- Watch reflexive verbs common to this theme: disfrazarse (to dress up), reunirse (to get together), celebrarse (to be celebrated), where the reflexive pronoun must agree with the subject even when the subject is a whole family or community.
- Check register and tense consistency last: a description of a yearly tradition should stay in the present/se construction, while a one-off memory should stay in the preterite/imperfect, without mixing the two systems in the same sentence.
Worked example
Translate into Spanish: The Day of the Dead is celebrated every year in Mexico in November. Last year my family and I went to a cemetery, and there were lots of flowers and candles everywhere. It was the most emotional celebration I have ever seen.
- Split into chunks: 'The Day of the Dead is celebrated every year in Mexico in November' / 'Last year my family and I went to a cemetery' / 'and there were lots of flowers and candles everywhere' / 'It was the most emotional celebration I have ever seen'.
- 'is celebrated every year' is a general recurring fact, so the impersonal se in the present: el Día de los Muertos se celebra todos los años en México en noviembre.
- 'Last year my family and I went to a cemetery' is a single completed action, preterite: el año pasado mi familia y yo fuimos a un cementerio.
- 'and there were lots of flowers and candles everywhere' is background scene-setting, imperfect: y había muchas flores y velas por todas partes.
- 'It was the most emotional celebration I have ever seen' uses a superlative with the preterite fue: fue la celebración más emocionante que he visto.
- Full translation: El Día de los Muertos se celebra todos los años en México en noviembre. El año pasado mi familia y yo fuimos a un cementerio, y había muchas flores y velas por todas partes. Fue la celebración más emocionante que he visto.
