Theme 1.4: Festivals and Traditions in the Spanish-Speaking World

Reading comprehension for Theme 1.4 covers texts describing festivals and traditions across Spain and Latin America, such as el Día de los Muertos, la Semana Santa, las Fallas, la Navidad and regional customs around food and family celebrations. The examiner is testing whether a student can pair a festival correctly with its country or región, understand impersonal se constructions typical of descriptive cultural writing (se celebra, se preparan platos típicos, se decoran las calles), follow date and sequence expressions, and compare how a tradition used to be celebrated with how it is celebrated today.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Identify the name of the festival or tradition and its country or región, usually given in the first sentence, since matching-style questions often test festival-to-country or festival-to-date pairs.
  2. Recognise impersonal se constructions (se celebra, se decoran las calles, se preparan platos típicos) as describing what people in general do, not a specific named individual, so do not attribute the action to one person by mistake.
  3. Underline date and time expressions (el dos de noviembre, durante una semana, cada año, la noche antes) to answer when questions accurately.
  4. Learn festival-specific food and object vocabulary (calaveras de azucar, turron, flores de papel, disfraces) since these words often carry a comprehension mark on their own.
  5. Track sequence connectives (primero, después, por la noche, al final de la fiesta) to place the festival's events in the correct order.
  6. Compare past and present customs, noticing the imperfect tense for how a tradition used to be celebrated (antes se hacía) against the present tense for how it is celebrated now (hoy en día se hace).
  7. In opinion sentences about a festival (me encanta esta tradición porque...), remember that the reason given after porque usually carries the mark, not just the opinion word itself.

Worked example

Read this extract and decide whether the statement that follows is true, false or not mentioned.

  1. Identify the country stated in the first sentence: México.
  2. Notice that the text describes the festival happening in México but does not compare it to any other country.
  3. The statement claims the festival is celebrated only in México - the text supports México as a location but never explicitly states it happens nowhere else.
  4. Since the text does not address whether the festival is celebrated elsewhere, the correct answer is not mentioned, not true.

Q1[6 marks]

(a) When and where does the festival of Las Fallas take place? (b) Name two typical foods mentioned in the text. (c) What are the fallas themselves, and what can they represent? (d) What happens to the fallas on the night of 19 March, and what is the exception? (e) What complaint does the text mention about the festival?
