Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Attempt every question in order but do not dwell too long on one you find hard; note your best working, move on, and return later if time allows.
  2. Rely on secure non-calculator written methods (column addition and subtraction, short and long multiplication and division), since no calculator is allowed on this paper.
  3. Build percentages from 10%, 5% and 1%, find fractions of amounts by dividing then multiplying, and find one share of a ratio before scaling up, since these non-calculator routes are faster and more reliable than working directly.
  4. Write out every line of working in the space given, since method marks are awarded independently of whether the final answer is correct.
  5. Estimate each answer by rounding to 1 significant figure before and after calculating, to catch an error before moving on.
  6. Manage your time by mark value, giving a high-mark multi-part question near the end proper time rather than rushing it.
  7. In the final few minutes, check every part of every question has an answer written down, and that each answer matches exactly what was asked, including units.

Worked example

A stationery shop buys 80 rulers for 12 pounds in total and sells each ruler for 35p. Work out the total profit once all 80 rulers are sold.

  1. Find the total revenue from selling all the rulers: 80 x 35p = 2800p, which is 28 pounds.
  2. The total cost is already given as 12 pounds.
  3. Subtract the cost from the revenue: 28 - 12 = 16.
  4. So the shop makes 16 pounds profit.
