Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Set out each calculation on paper before using the calculator, writing down the numbers and the operation, so your method is clear even if a key is pressed incorrectly.
  2. Use brackets or the calculator's memory for a multi-step calculation, rather than rounding a middle answer and typing it back in, since early rounding is a common cause of an inaccurate final answer.
  3. Estimate each answer first by rounding, and check the calculator's answer is a sensible size before writing it down.
  4. Apply any rounding instruction (decimal places, significant figures, nearest penny) only to your final answer, keeping full accuracy through earlier steps.
  5. Read data from a table, graph or chart carefully and note the exact values needed before you start calculating.
  6. Always include the correct units in your answer, since this paper mixes money, length, area, volume and time within the same set of questions.
  7. Spend time in proportion to the marks on offer, and check that multi-part answers all address exactly what each part asked.

Worked example

Priya invests 620 pounds in a savings account that pays 2.5% simple interest per year. Work out the total amount in the account after 3 years.

  1. Find one year's interest: 2.5% of 620 = 620 x 0.025 = 15.50 pounds.
  2. Since it is simple interest, the same interest is added each year, so multiply by 3: 15.50 x 3 = 46.50 pounds.
  3. Add the total interest to the original amount: 620 + 46.50 = 666.50.
  4. So the account holds 666.50 pounds after 3 years.
