Maths: Full Practice Paper (Core, Non-Calculator, Set 5)
This is another full-length, ISEB-style 13+ Common Entrance Core Maths paper taken without a calculator, covering the same Core specification as the other Core papers, number and calculation, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry and measures, and statistics and probability, but with a fresh set of questions so it can be used to check progress after earlier non-calculator practice papers.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before you start, note how many marks the paper is worth and roughly how many minutes you should spend per mark, so you can pace yourself through the paper.
- Choose one reliable written method for each type of calculation, such as the grid or column method for multiplication, and stick to it consistently rather than switching methods mid-question.
- When a question mixes several topics, for example ratio followed by percentages, deal with one instruction at a time and write down the result of each step before moving to the next.
- Keep units consistent throughout a question, converting between units such as centimetres and metres, or grams and kilograms, before you combine quantities.
- Use inverse operations to check your answer, for example checking a subtraction by adding the answer back to the number you subtracted.
- If you get stuck on a question, move on and come back to it at the end rather than losing time you need for other questions.
Worked example
In a class of 32 pupils, the ratio of pupils who walk to school to those who are driven is 5:3. Of the pupils who walk, 1/4 also cycle on some days. How many pupils walk to school but never cycle?
- Find the total number of parts in the ratio: 5 + 3 = 8 parts.
- Find the value of one part: 32 / 8 = 4 pupils.
- Find the number of pupils who walk to school: 5 x 4 = 20 pupils.
- Find the number of walkers who also cycle on some days: 1/4 of 20 = 5 pupils.
- Subtract to find the number who walk but never cycle: 20 - 5 = 15 pupils.
