Maths: Full Practice Paper (Core, Calculator, Set 5)
This full-length, ISEB-style 13+ Common Entrance Core Maths paper allows a calculator and gives a fifth complete set of Core-specification questions, so that confident calculator use, sensible rounding and choosing the right calculation for a worded problem can keep being practised on fresh material once earlier calculator papers are comfortable.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Read each question fully before reaching for the calculator, so you calculate the right thing first time rather than the first number you notice.
- Use the calculator's memory or bracket keys for multi-step calculations so intermediate values are not rounded before the final step.
- For percentage change questions, work out the correct multiplier, such as 1.12 for a 12% increase or 0.88 for a 12% decrease, before you calculate.
- For questions involving formulae, such as area, volume or speed, write the formula down first and substitute the given values before calculating.
- Check that units in your final answer match what the question asks for, converting where needed, for example from minutes to hours.
- Round only at the very end of a calculation, to the accuracy the question specifies, and state the units in your final answer.
Worked example
A water tank in the shape of a cuboid measures 1.2 m by 0.8 m by 1.5 m. Water is pumped in at a rate of 45 litres per minute. Work out how many minutes it takes to fill the tank completely. (1 m^3 = 1000 litres.)
- Work out the volume of the tank: 1.2 x 0.8 x 1.5 = 1.44 m^3.
- Convert the volume to litres: 1.44 x 1000 = 1440 litres.
- Divide the volume by the rate of flow to find the time: 1440 / 45 = 32 minutes.
- Check the answer is sensible: at 45 litres per minute, 32 minutes gives 45 x 32 = 1440 litres, which matches the tank's volume.
- State the final answer: it takes 32 minutes to fill the tank.

Exam-style questions
Written in the style of a 13+ Common Entrance exam paper, with a full mark scheme.
A theatre sells adult tickets at 14.50 pounds and child tickets at 8.75 pounds. On one evening, 120 adult tickets and 85 child tickets are sold. (a) Work out the total amount taken from ticket sales. (b) The theatre's running costs for the evening are 1,950 pounds. Work out the profit made.
