Science: Full Practice Paper 11
Full Practice Paper 11 is another complete practice paper in the 13+ Common Entrance Science style, again mixing Biology, Chemistry and Physics questions in one timed sitting, building further exam stamina across the whole science curriculum rather than one subject at a time.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Before starting, glance across the whole paper to see how marks are distributed between biology, chemistry and physics, so you can pace yourself according to the marks available rather than assuming an even split.
- Answer definition- and recall-based questions immediately and in order, since returning to them later wastes time better spent on calculations and longer explanations.
- For circuit questions, check whether components are connected in series (one loop, the same current everywhere) or in parallel (multiple loops, current splits between them), since this changes how current, voltage and resistance behave.
- For any acid-base or pH question, remember that pH values below 7 are acidic, pH 7 is neutral, and values above 7 are alkaline, and that neutralisation produces a salt and water.
- Where a question describes a human body system such as digestion, identify which organ is being described from its function first (for example, 'breaks down food using acid' means the stomach), then answer the specific question asked.
- For any calculation, write the equation before substituting values, and give your final answer with the correct unit and to the number of significant figures requested.
- In your last few minutes, check that nothing has been left blank, since an attempt using the right idea can often still gain a mark.
Worked example
Two resistors, of resistance 4 ohm and 8 ohm, are connected in series with a 12 V battery. (a) Calculate the total resistance of the circuit. (b) Use V = I x R to calculate the current flowing through the circuit.
- In series, resistances add together: total resistance = 4 + 8 = 12 ohm.
- Rearrange V = I x R to make current the subject: I = V / R.
- Substitute the values: I = 12 / 12.
- Final answer: (a) total resistance = 12 ohm; (b) current = 1 A.

Exam-style questions

A 6 V battery is connected to a single resistor of resistance 3 ohm. (a) Use V = I x R to calculate the current flowing in the circuit. (b) A second, identical 3 ohm resistor is now added in series with the first, keeping the same 6 V battery. Calculate the new current flowing in the circuit. (c) State what has happened to the total resistance and explain why the current has changed as it has.

A student adds a few drops of universal indicator to three unknown colourless solutions, X, Y and Z. Solution X turns the indicator red, solution Y turns it green, and solution Z turns it purple. (a) State the approximate pH range for solution X. (b) State whether solution Y is acidic, neutral or alkaline. (c) The student then adds solution X, a strong acid, gradually to solution Z, a strong alkali, until the mixture is exactly neutralised. State the two types of substance produced by this neutralisation reaction.
