Peppered moths exist in two colour forms: pale (speckled) moths and dark moths. Before the Industrial Revolution, tree trunks in many parts of Britain were pale, often covered in pale lichen. During the Industrial Revolution, soot and pollution from factories blackened tree trunks in many industrial areas.
