Science: Full Practice Paper 6
Full Practice Paper 6 is a sixth complete practice paper in the style of 13+ Common Entrance Science, again mixing Biology, Chemistry and Physics questions across one timed sitting to build the confidence needed for the real ISEB paper.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Check the mark allocation shown next to each question before answering, since a question worth 1 mark usually needs a short, single-fact answer, while a question worth 3 or more marks needs several distinct points.
- Keep an eye on the clock throughout rather than only at the start, and move on from a question you are stuck on rather than spending several minutes on a single mark.
- When a question is about an experiment or investigation, look for what was changed (the independent variable), what was measured (the dependent variable) and what was kept the same (control variables) before answering.
- For any calculation involving magnification, use magnification = image size / actual size, and check that both measurements are in the same unit before dividing.
- Where a question gives you a diagram of an organ, a circuit or an apparatus set-up, label your answer using the correct scientific names shown or implied by the diagram rather than vague descriptions.
- Re-read multi-part questions once fully answered, checking that each lettered part has been attempted and that no part has been skipped by mistake.
Worked example
A pupil looks at an onion cell under a microscope. The image of the cell she draws is 40 mm wide. The actual width of the real cell is 0.05 mm. Use magnification = image size / actual size to calculate the magnification of her drawing.
- Make sure both measurements are in the same unit: the image size (40 mm) and the actual size (0.05 mm) are already both in millimetres, so no conversion is needed.
- Substitute the values into magnification = image size / actual size: magnification = 40 / 0.05.
- Divide 40 by 0.05: 40 / 0.05 = 800.
- Check the answer is sensible: a magnification of 800 times means the drawing is 800 times bigger than the real cell, which is a realistic figure for a microscope drawing.
- Final answer: magnification = x800 (800 times).
