Section A (Q1-10): a four-letter word is hidden inside one longer word, spelled using letters that run together in order, with no gaps. Section B (Q11-20): a four-letter word is hidden between two neighbouring words in a sentence, using the end of the first word and the start of the second. Section C (Q21-32): a missing word completes the first given word and also begins the second given word, making two real compound words, for example SURF ( .... ) WALK, where BOARD makes SURFBOARD and BOARDWALK. Section D (Q33-42): exactly one letter moves from the end of the first bracketed word to the front of the second bracketed word, so that both remaining and newly formed words are correctly spelled, for example (KITE) (AT), where moving E leaves KIT and makes EAT. Each question restates its own rule, so read every prompt carefully before choosing from options A to E. Every question is worth 1 mark.
Worked example. A four-letter word is hidden inside the word below, spelled using letters that run in order with no gaps. Which option is the hidden word?
"WARDROBE"
A) WARD B) ROBE C) DROP D) BORE E) WEAR Answer: B) ROBE. Reading WARDROBE letter by letter (W-A-R-D-R-O-B-E), the last four letters, R-O-B-E, run together with no gaps and spell ROBE, a real word. WARD (option A) is also hidden in this word, but it is not offered as the correct pairing here; DROP, BORE and WEAR cannot be traced as an unbroken run of consecutive letters in WARDROBE, so B) ROBE is the answer that is genuinely spelled out.
