Each sentence below hides a word where one word ends and the very next word begins. Read the last few letters of the first word together with the first few letters of the second word: in order, with nothing skipped, reordered or repeated, they spell a real word. The two words either side of the join can be much longer than the hidden word itself, and an apostrophe s ending still counts as part of the first word. This set gets progressively harder: the earliest items hide a short three letter word, the middle items hide four letter words, and the final items hide a full compound word (two smaller words joined together, such as CARPET or HANDBAG) spanning the join. For every question only one option is ever genuinely hidden in the sentence; the others are there to test whether you check the whole sentence carefully before choosing. Every question is worth 1 mark.

Worked example. A word is hidden where one word ends and the next begins. Which option below is hidden in this sentence? "The wildcat napped under the shady old tree." A) MOUSE B) CATNAP C) SHADE D) TREES E) UNDID Answer: B) CATNAP. WILDCAT and NAPPED sit next to each other in the sentence. The last three letters of WILDCAT (C, A, T) joined to the first three letters of NAPPED (N, A, P) spell CATNAP, a real compound word. MOUSE, SHADE, TREES and UNDID are all real words, but none of them can be traced across any pair of neighbouring words in this sentence, so B) CATNAP is the only option genuinely hidden.
