Revision notes: Fractions of an Amount

Finding a fraction of an amount means working out what a given fraction, such as 3/5, of a quantity is worth. The method uses division to find the value of one part, then multiplication to find the value of the number of parts needed.

  1. Divide the amount by the denominator of the fraction to find the value of one part (the unit fraction).
  2. Multiply that value by the numerator to find the value of the required number of parts.
  3. For a two-step problem (a fraction of a fraction, or a fraction of a remaining amount), work out each fraction operation in order, left to right.
  4. Check the answer is sensible: a proper fraction of an amount should always be less than the whole amount.
Worked example. Work out 3/5 of 240 pounds. A shop has 60 bikes; 2/3 of them are sold. How many bikes are left?
  1. 3/5 of 240: divide 240 by 5 = 48 (one fifth), then multiply by 3: 48 x 3 = 144.
  2. For the bikes: 2/3 of 60 are sold. Divide 60 by 3 = 20 (one third), then multiply by 2: 20 x 2 = 40 sold.
  3. Bikes left = 60 - 40 = 20.
Answer: 3/5 of 240 pounds = 144 pounds; 20 bikes are left.
