The storm arrived without warning last night. I had never seen such wierd clouds rolling in from the sea, and the wind grew stronger with every hour. My little cottage stands seperate from the village, so I was alone when the power failed.
I keep candles in a special box for exactly this reason. The local goverment sent a letter last month reminding lighthouse keepers to be prepared, and I was glad that I had listened.
By morning the sea was calm again. Gulls searched for food along the shore, and I did not want to embarass myself by oversleeping, so I climbed the two hundred steps to check the light. It is necesary to check it every single day, whatever the weather.
Later, a small boat asked me to acommodate two tired sailors for the night. I was happy to help, and I did not want them to think I would not recieve visitors kindly. Looking after this stretch of coastline is my most treasured posession.
