Mist lies along the dyke like breath held in,
The willows lean and listen to the reeds,
A heron stands on stilts of grey and thin
Watching the water where the current feeds.
The sun climbs up behind a bank of cloud,
Pale as a coin too worn to read its face,
And somewhere out beyond the poplars' crowd
A church bell counts the hour into space.
The fields lie flat as pages waiting ink,
Furrowed and brown, they wait for what will grow,
While frost still silvers every fence and link
And geese in arrows write the sky they know.
I stand and watch the morning shrug off night,
And feel this old flat land turn gold with light.
