Measures and Units: Practice Set 2

Measures and Units: Practice Set 2 is a second practice round for 11+ measures, covering conversions between metric units of length, mass and capacity and reading scales, before pushing into compound conversions and mixed-unit calculations.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Learn the standard metric conversions: 1 km = 1000 m, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 kg = 1000 g, and 1 litre = 1000 ml.
  2. To convert from a larger unit to a smaller one, multiply by the conversion factor; to convert from a smaller unit to a larger one, divide by it.
  3. Before adding, subtracting or comparing measurements, convert them all into the same unit first.
  4. When reading a scale, work out the value of each small division by finding the difference between two labelled marks and dividing by the number of gaps between them.
  5. For a compound conversion, such as changing a speed from km/h to m/min, convert one part at a time (the distance, then the time) rather than trying to do both at once.
  6. Check a converted answer is a sensible size, for example a length in millimetres should be a much bigger number than the same length in metres.

Worked example

A plank of wood is 2.4 m long. Priti cuts off a piece 65 cm long. Calculate the length of wood remaining, giving your answer in metres.

  1. Convert the total length to centimetres: 2.4 x 100 = 240 cm.
  2. Subtract the length cut off: 240 - 65 = 175 cm.
  3. Convert the remaining length back to metres: 175 / 100 = 1.75 m.
  4. Final answer: 1.75 m.
