Worded Problems Set C
Worded Problems Set C is a practice set of multi-step word problems that mix several number and measure skills within one question, testing whether a pupil can read a story carefully, identify the operations needed, and apply them in the correct order rather than testing a single skill in isolation.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Read the whole question once without calculating, to understand the story and what final answer is being asked for.
- Underline or note every number given, along with the unit it belongs to, such as pounds, minutes or kilograms.
- Decide how many separate calculation steps the problem needs, and plan the order before starting to calculate.
- Complete one step at a time, writing down and labelling each intermediate answer so it is not lost or confused with another number.
- Watch for questions that give more information than is needed, and for questions that require working backwards from a final total.
- Re-read the original question after calculating to check the final answer actually answers what was asked, not a different quantity along the way.
Worked example
A baker makes 200 bread rolls. She sells 3/4 of them in the morning. In the afternoon she sells half of what remains. How many rolls are left unsold at the end of the day?
- Find how many rolls are sold in the morning: 3/4 of 200 = 150.
- Find how many rolls remain after the morning: 200 - 150 = 50.
- Find how many are sold in the afternoon: half of 50 = 25.
- Find how many rolls are left after the afternoon: 50 - 25 = 25.
- Final answer: 25 rolls are left unsold at the end of the day.

Answer: 200 (fiction is 3/8 of 320 = 120, so non-fiction is 320 - 120 = 200)
Q5A car travels 45 miles in the first hour and 38 miles in the second hour. It then has 150 miles left to travel. What is the total length of the journey?Show answer
Answer: 233 miles
Q6A box of 144 pencils is shared equally between 6 classes, and each class then gives away 4 pencils. How many pencils does each class have left?Show answer
Answer: 20 (144 / 6 = 24, 24 - 4 = 20)
