Place Value and Rounding: Practice Set 3 is a practice set covering how to read, write and compare large numbers using the value of each digit, and how to round whole numbers and decimals to a given place, then use rounding to estimate and check the size of a calculated answer.

Before you start

Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:

Method

  1. Identify the place value of each digit in a number by its position, units, tens, hundreds, thousands and so on, before comparing or rounding.
  2. To round to a given place, look at the digit immediately to its right: 5 or more rounds up, below 5 rounds down and stays the same.
  3. When rounding a whole number, change every digit after the rounding place to zero, rather than simply deleting them.
  4. To compare large numbers, line up the digits by place value first, then compare from the largest place value down.
  5. Use rounding to estimate an answer before calculating exactly, so an unreasonable final answer can be spotted.
  6. For decimals, remember that digits after the rounding place are removed entirely, not set to zero, since trailing zeros after a decimal point do not change the value.

Worked example

Round 47,382 to the nearest thousand, and use your rounded value to estimate 47,382 + 31,905 to the nearest thousand.

  1. Identify the thousands digit in 47,382: it is 7.
  2. Look at the digit to the right of the thousands place, the hundreds digit, which is 3; since 3 is less than 5, round down.
  3. Round 47,382 to the nearest thousand: 47,000.
  4. Round 31,905 to the nearest thousand in the same way: the hundreds digit is 9, which is 5 or more, so round up to 32,000.
  5. Add the rounded values to estimate: 47,000 + 32,000 = 79,000.
  6. Final answer: 47,382 rounds to 47,000, and the estimated sum is 79,000.
