Four Operations and Worded Number: Practice Set 3 is a practice set applying addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to worded number problems, covering multi-digit written and mental methods, remainders in division, and choosing the correct operation from the wording of a question.
Before you start
Make sure you're comfortable with these topics first:
Method
- Identify which operation the words in the question point to: 'altogether' or 'total' often means add, 'left' or 'difference' often means subtract, 'each' or 'share' often means multiply or divide.
- For multi-digit addition or subtraction, line up the digits by place value carefully, especially when the numbers of digits differ.
- For multiplication, break a large number into a sum of simpler parts, for example 23 x 6 = (20 x 6) + (3 x 6), rather than guessing.
- For division, decide whether a remainder should be rounded up, rounded down, or expressed as a fraction, based on what the question is actually asking.
- When a problem uses two or more operations, decide the correct order by reading the story, not by calculating left to right automatically.
- Estimate the answer first using rounded numbers, then check the exact answer is close to that estimate.
Worked example
A school is organising a trip. There are 187 pupils going. Each coach holds 45 pupils. How many coaches are needed, and how many empty seats will there be on the last coach?
- Divide the number of pupils by the coach capacity: 187 / 45 = 4 remainder 7, since 45 x 4 = 180 and 187 - 180 = 7.
- Since 7 pupils remain after filling 4 full coaches, a 5th coach is needed, even though it will not be full.
- Find how many seats are used on the 5th coach: 7 pupils out of 45 seats.
- Find the empty seats on the last coach: 45 - 7 = 38.
- Final answer: 5 coaches are needed, with 38 empty seats on the last coach.
