Decimals: Practice Set 2
Decimals: Practice Set 2 is a second practice round for 11+ decimals, revisiting place value, ordering and rounding before pushing into harder multiplying and dividing of decimals and mixed-operation word problems, all without a calculator.
Method
- Line up decimal points for addition and subtraction, padding shorter numbers with zeros so every place-value column matches.
- For multiplying two decimals, multiply the digits as whole numbers first, then count the total number of decimal places in both original numbers to place the point correctly.
- To divide by a decimal, multiply both numbers in the division by the same power of 10 until the number you are dividing by becomes a whole number, then divide as normal.
- When a problem mixes several operations, work through it one step at a time in the order the words describe, only rounding at the very end unless told otherwise.
- Convert between decimals, fractions and percentages using place value, remembering that the digits after the point represent tenths, hundredths and thousandths.
- Estimate first by rounding each number to its nearest whole number, so you can spot an answer that is the wrong size by a factor of 10.
Worked example
A jug holds 1.8 litres of water. Priya pours out 0.35 litres, then pours in another 0.6 litres. How much water is in the jug now?
- Subtract the amount poured out from the starting amount: 1.8 - 0.35 = 1.45 litres.
- Add the amount poured back in: 1.45 + 0.6 = 2.05 litres.
- Check the size of the answer makes sense: since more was poured in than was poured out, the total should end up slightly above the starting 1.8 litres, and 2.05 is indeed slightly more.
- Final answer: 2.05 litres.
